I should have prepared for this better.

I went into this tutoring job knowing full well that it wouldn’t be a long-term position, that this program will not occur during the summer. Two weeks ago I had learned that the last day of the program was May 11th. Moreover, the last enrollment date for the program was late February, meaning no more students are enrolling in the program for this school year. Two of my students have finished their 30 hours of tutoring from me, and I’ll be working much fewer hours in the coming weeks, at least in regard to this job. This is what I mean when I say to myself that I should have prepared for this much sooner. At least by late March, I should have been tweaking my resume’, drafting cover letters, applying to other job positions and volunteer/internship opportunities.

I should have and yet just two days ago I barely started this process. So far I have applied to two positions- being an administrative assistant at New York Foundation for Senior Citizens, and a research associate at Partnership for New York City. I don’t expect to hear back from them. That’s usually my skeptical attitude when I’m job searching. I apply like crazy expecting that most of my inquiries will end up on uninterested eyes. If I had started this a week ago, I probably would have applied to like 30 places by now.

I was not motivated to start this process early because it’s April, the month I expected to hear back from NYC Teaching Fellows. After having worked as a tutor for more than a month now, I find myself willing and ready to make that career shift to being an educator. My major is social work, and my lifelong goal up to this point has been to become a social worker combatting poverty/homelessness, helping foster children, or assisting formerly incarcerated individuals get re-integrated back into society, but if life now calls me to change that dream in order to be a teacher, I’d gladly accept it now. I’m still uncertain as to whether I’d be ab excellent teacher or not, but the image of being in front of the classroom engaging the future leaders of the nation, it’s now a very attractive image to me. Nonetheless, NYC Teaching Fellows still has not made its decision and as it’s taking this long for them to decide, I fear their response is a negative one. If you are a student looking for some of the best tutors in your area you can Click here to book private lessons, these trial classes are free and you can schedule your classes accordingly as well.

As I wait, I need to develop some sort of a contingent position I can fall back to. This is the time for me to really be applying like crazy.

Another thing I really want to focus on is to become a committed volunteer or an intern, contributing at least six hours a week. It’s not just about making money with me. To live in this city, being able to pay my rent is my primary concern, but still, I want to build myself up, make myself better capable of helping others, and help the community now as best as I can.

I’m not that qualified and these days I’m not even that able enough to be able to wake up early in the morning, but nonetheless I will keep trying, keep on trying and doing my best. My best isn’t much but it’s really just all I got.
